Course Description

This course offers an introduction to the state-of-the-art mathematical theory and numerical analysis in imaging. Special emphasis is given to variational techniques which lead to PDE-based image processing algorithms, and interface propagation techniques for which the emphasis will be implicit representation (level-set methods). This course was designed in order to be self-contained and suitable for students with varied backgrounds. The first part of the course introduces some popular filter-based and transform-based image manipulation techniques and their applications in basic image analyses. It also provides the necessary mathematical background and detailed examination of the numerical algorithms. This course not only reflects the theoretical progress and the growth of the field, but will also serve as an excellent starting-point for students willing to conduct their research in this area.
